ACTION AND MECHANISM

- Antipruritic. Its mechanism of action in atopic dermatitis is unknown, but it has been observed that it reduces the thickness of the epidermis, and may present antifungal, antiproliferative and antifungal activity.

 

PHARMACOKINETICS

In subjects treated with coaltar or coal tar on more than 50% of the skin surface, some increase in concentration has been observed during the first week; however, after three weeks of daily treatment with coaltar, urinary excretion of 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OH-P) and alpha-naphthol (naphthalene metabolite) decreased until returning to their baseline values.

INDICATIONS

- Symptomatic treatment of [PSORIASIS] and [SEBORRHEIC DERMATITIS] of the skin and scalp.
- Symptomatic treatment of scaly processes of the scalp, such as [SEBORRHEIC DERMATITIS], [Dandruff] or itching of the scalp.

POSOLOGY

- Adults and children > 3 years: apply to the scalp 1-2 times a week.

- Children < 3 years: safety and efficacy have not been evaluated.

 

DOSAGE IN KIDNEY FAILURE

DOSAGE IN LIVER FAILURE

No specific dosage recommendations have been made.

RULES FOR CORRECT ADMINISTRATION

Properly moisten the hair with water and apply the shampoo producing foam, massaging with your fingers. Rinse well with water and repeat the administration.

 

ADVICE TO THE PATIENT

- If irritation or hypersensitivity occurs, consult your doctor.
- This product is intended for topical administration only. It should not be ingested.
- It is advisable to avoid its administration in the eyes, mucous membranes, genital and rectal area, as well as on skin with acute inflammation, open wounds or skin infections. In case of accidental contact with eyes, it is recommended to wash with saline solution or water.
- The medication may temporarily stain blonde, bleached, or dyed hair.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

- Hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients.

- Presence of [FOLICULITIS] and [ACNE].

- It should not be applied to inflamed or scarred skin (open weeping wounds or skin infections). Do not use in patients with acute inflammatory processes of the skin, such as [CUTANEOUS TUBERCULOSIS], [VARICELA], [HERPES ZOSTER], [HERPESVIRUS SIMPLE INFECTION] and [LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS].

 

PRECAUTIONS

- Contact with mucous membranes. Contact of coal tar with mucous membranes can give rise to irritability phenomena and increased absorption of coal tar. It is advisable to avoid contact between coal tar and the ocular, skin or any other type of mucous membranes. If such contact occurs accidentally, it is advisable to wash quickly with normal saline solution or water.

INTERACTIONS

- Photosensitizing medications: The simultaneous use of coal tar with photosensitizing medications may produce additive photosensitizing effects; The simultaneous use of coaltar with systemic or topical methoxalene or trioxysalen is not recommended.

PREGNANCY

Safety in Animals : Coal tar has been shown to be teratogenic and fetotoxic to young laboratory animals when administered topically, orally or by inhalation, at high doses and maternally toxic doses.

Safety in humans : There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans. It is not recommended for use during pregnancy.

Effects on fertility : No specific studies have been performed in humans.

 

LACTATION

Safety in animals: no data available.

Safety in humans: It is unknown whether it is excreted in breast milk and the possible effects on the nursing infant. It is therefore recommended to avoid its administration or discontinue breastfeeding.

 

CHILDREN

The safety of shampoos has not been evaluated in children under 3 years of age, so their use is not recommended.

ADVANCED AGE

No specific problems have been described in the elderly that require dosage readjustment.

 

ADVERSE REACTIONS

Coal tar at low concentrations (shampoos) generally produces mild and infrequent reactions. At higher concentrations (as in psoriasis preparations) these reactions may be more frequent:
- Dermatological: Sometimes [FOLICULITIS], [SKIN IRRITATION], [SKIN IRRITATION] may appear. Very rarely, [PHOTOSENSITIVITY REACTIONS] of the skin. Additionally, coal tar can cause [ACNE].
If the patient experiences any irritation and/or hypersensitivity, the treatment should be suspended.

OVERDOSE

Symptoms: There is no risk of overdose under normal conditions of use, due to its method of application. In case of accidental ingestion, nausea and vomiting may occur.
Treatment: Symptomatic treatment will be applied. Induction of vomiting and gastric lavage. Administration of activated carbon. Administration of large amounts of water and antacids if necessary.
