Glycerol
Rovi Children Glycerin Suppositories are used for the relief of occasional constipation in children from 2 to 12 years old. Glycerol, the active ingredient of this medication, acts as a laxative when administered rectally, facilitating the evacuation of feces.
ACTION AND MECHANISM
Glycerol is a laxative that acts rectally through two mechanisms:
- Irritant effect : It irritates the rectal mucosa without affecting the distal walls of the intestine, causing contraction of the rectal muscles and the expulsion of feces.
- Osmotic effect : Draws water into the intestinal lumen due to its hygroscopic capacity, which softens feces and facilitates its elimination.
The effects of glycerol appear between 15-30 minutes and one hour after administration.
PHARMACOKINETICS
- Absorption : Glycerol administered rectally is minimally absorbed and is almost completely eliminated during defecation. Orally, its absorption is high, reaching maximum plasma concentrations after 60-90 minutes.
- Distribution : The absorbed glycerol is widely distributed in the body, accumulating in muscle fat.
- Metabolism : It is metabolized in the liver, where around 80% of the absorbed amount is processed.
- Elimination : Mainly eliminated by hepatic metabolism, with 20% excreted in urine unchanged. The elimination half-life is 30-45 minutes.
INDICATIONS
Local symptomatic treatment of transient and occasional constipation.
POSOLOGY
- Children 2-12 years : 1 suppository or 1 application (enema) every 24 hours.
- Its use is not recommended for more than 6-7 days without medical criteria. If symptoms persist or worsen, consult a doctor or pharmacist.
RULES FOR CORRECT ADMINISTRATION
- Suppositories : Harden the suppositories by placing them under cold running water for 30 seconds or 10 seconds in a glass of water before inserting them deeply into the anal opening. Repress evacuation for as long as possible to allow the medication to work properly.
ADVICE TO THE PATIENT
- Modify lifestyle habits before starting constipation treatment: ingest adequate fluids and fiber, respond to the stimulus of defecation, and perform physical exercise.
- Do not use in patients with intestinal obstructions.
- Consult a doctor or pharmacist if constipation worsens or if symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal bloating or fever appear.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the medication.
- Conditions that could be aggravated by the laxative effect, such as intestinal obstruction, intestinal perforation, chronic inflammatory bowel disease, appendicitis or toxic megacolon. Do not use in patients with diarrhea.
PRECAUTIONS
- Symptoms of intestinal obstruction: perform a differential diagnosis before starting treatment with a laxative in patients with nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain of unknown origin or abdominal distention.
SPECIAL WARNINGS
- Perform a differential diagnosis in patients suspected of intestinal obstruction.
INTERACTIONS
No drug interactions have been described.
PREGNANCY
Not indicated for pregnant women.
LACTATION
