ACTION AND MECHANISM

- Antipruritic. Its mechanism of action in atopic dermatitis is unknown, but it has been observed to reduce the thickness of the epidermis, and may have antifungal, antiproliferative and antifungal activity.

PHARMACOKINETICS

In subjects treated with coaltar or coal tar on more than 50% of the skin surface, some increase in concentration has been observed during the first week; however, after three weeks of daily treatment with coaltar, urinary excretion of 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OH-P) and alpha-naphthol (naphthalene metabolite) decreased until it returned to its baseline values.

INDICATIONS

- Symptomatic treatment of [PSORIASIS] and [SEBORRHEIC DERMATITIS] of the skin and scalp.
- Symptomatic treatment of scaly processes of the scalp, such as [SEBORRHEIC DERMATITIS], [DANDRUFF] or scalp itching.

POSOLOGY

- Adults and children > 3 years, topical: apply to the scalp 1-2 times a week.
- Children < 3 years, topical: safety and efficacy have not been evaluated.

DOSAGE IN RENAL FAILURE

No specific dosage recommendations have been made.

DOSAGE IN LIVER FAILURE

No specific dosage recommendations have been made.

RULES FOR CORRECT ADMINISTRATION

- Shampoo: adequately moisten the hair with water and apply the shampoo producing a lather, massaging with your fingers. Rinse well with water and repeat the administration.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

- Hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients.
- Presence of [FOLICULITIS] and [ACNE VULGAR].
- It should not be applied to inflamed or chafed skin (open oozing wounds or skin infections). Do not use in patients with acute inflammatory processes of the skin, such as [CUTANEOUS TUBERCULOSIS], [VARICELLA], [HERPES ZOSTER], [HERPES SIMPLE INFECTION] and [LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSO].

PRECAUTIONS

- Contact with mucosa. The contact of the coal tar with the mucous membranes can give rise to phenomena of irritability and increases in the absorption of the coal tar. It is advisable to avoid contact between the coal tar and the ocular, skin or any other type of mucosa. If such contact should accidentally occur, prompt flushing with normal saline solution or water is advised.

ADVICE TO THE PATIENT

- If irritation or hypersensitivity occurs, consult a doctor.
- This product is intended for topical administration only. It should not be ingested.
- It is advisable to avoid its administration in the eyes, mucous membranes, genital and rectal area, as well as on skin with acute inflammations, open wounds or skin infections. In case of accidental contact with the eyes, it is recommended to wash with a saline solution or with water.
- The medicine can temporarily stain blond, bleached or dyed hair.

INTERACTIONS

- Photosensitizing drugs: The simultaneous use of coal tar with photosensitizing drugs can produce additive photosensitizing effects; Simultaneous use of coaltar with systemic or topical methoxalen or trioxysalen is not recommended.

PREGNANCY

Category C according to the FDA: There have been no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, therefore it is recommended to avoid its administration

LACTATION

It is unknown if it is excreted in breast milk and the possible effects on the nursing infant. It is therefore recommended to avoid its administration or suspend breastfeeding.

CHILDREN

The safety of shampoos in children under 3 years of age has not been evaluated, so their use is not recommended.

SENIORS

Although there have been no adequate studies on its use in the elderly, specifically geriatric problems have not been described.

ADVERSE REACTIONS

Coal tar at low concentrations (shampoos) generally produces mild and infrequent reactions. At higher concentrations (as in preparations for psoriasis) these reactions may be more frequent:
- Dermatological: Sometimes [FOLICULITIS], [SKIN IRRITATION], [SKIN IRRITATION] may appear. Very rarely, [PHOTOSENSITIVITY REACTIONS] of the skin. Also, coal tar can cause [ACNE].
In the event that the patient experiences any irritation and/or hypersensitivity, the treatment should be suspended.

OVERDOSE

Symptoms: There is no risk of overdose under normal conditions of use, due to its form of application. In case of accidental ingestion, nausea and vomiting may occur.
Treatment: Symptomatic treatment will be applied. Induction of vomiting and gastric lavage. Administration of activated carbon. Administration of large amounts of water and antacids if necessary.
